London & Strangenss in Stoke

I expected this week to be the quiet week of my holidays, and it was for the first two days, doing all important jobs like getting a haircut (I know, how exciting).

That changed however came Wednesday when I popped down to London to stay with the ever delightful Martin Cort. Having met Martin a few months ago and emailed for longer it was a lovely surprise to be invited down to stay with him and his partner. I met Martin at the CAA (google it) for lunch which was great as I'd seen pictures of the place but never been in (its rather exclusive!). I must say it was rather odd to have lunch, when everyone around you and everyone who walked through the door was someone you recognised, bur fun never the less. Over the next few days we had some incredible food and I had such a lovely relaxing time with them (learning a lot about Spain as well). It made for a lovely few days, staying with them, but sadly come Friday I headed home.

Saturday however, Dad and I headed back to London (about 10 minutes from where I'd been earlier in the week) for the BFI and Radio Times Television Festival. We got there nice and early and had tea in the National Theatre where I bumped into Russel Tovey (I can't think of many weekends which have started so well), before our first event which was a screening of 'The Author of Beltraffio'. This is a TV film which was directed by Tony Scott (yep, the Tony Scott), but has only just been rediscovered since it was first shown and we were the first to see it after all that time. It featured Tom Baker and Georgina Hale as the leads, with Georgina being there for a short talk after. As we left I bumped into the delightful Daroll Blake. Surprisingly he remembered me and we had a lovely chat about the film as well. From there we watched a preview of 'The Durrells', a series I've never seen but rather enjoyed. At the end I managed to catch the writer who had done Who which was nice, only to be interrupted by Vernon Dobtcheff which was such a joy! After that we had our final event, a talk about 'Call the Midwives' which was interesting as ever.

Sunday however was still busy as it was an early start for Stoke CON Trent, to spend the day with the Strangeness in Space team. This was our third year there and great fun as ever this year we were joined by Sophia Aldred, so it was nice to have more of the team together. As well as helping out, I popped round and met a few guests.  There seemed to be a lot of cake involved which is always good and by all accounts, everything is going well with the series. If you’re interested dear reader, have a look and a listen to the series, it is all free (www.strangenessinspace.com).
