Freshers and Doctor Who (guess which was more exciting)
As was the case last week, this week started on Monday (aren't I funny), which meant the first day at uni (at last!). Day one was spent signing paper (aren't I lucky). The evening saw our first freshers event, a SU quiz. It was nice to do it as a flat, but it went on for a little too long (they did play some 80s music between rounds, so it wasn't all bad).
Tuesday saw the course actually start, with a morning worth of health and safety talk (it gets better!) followed by library induction (they're spoiling me!). The evening was another example of why I win worst student of the year, I stayed in with the designers to watch Monsters Inc. Whilst others went to the pub.
Wednesday can be summed up as 'lighting'. With a nice chat to Peter Miles about Saturday's Dalek story and a general catch up ( he's got some exciting things coming up!). In honour of Saturday's episode we (another guy from Stage Management and I) watched Genesis of the Daleks (spot the link), and I got round to taking my laptop in to be repaired. Unfortunately they had to wipe my hard drive, so I lost all my pics from the Experience (looks like I'll have to go again, what a shame).
Thursday was spent looking at how a theatre works and who does what in Stage Management (I found it rather interesting) and collecting my laptop. By now we (SM friend and I) had discovered how good the SU café was for sausages/bacon sandwiches, (a requirement before we start each day now). Once again I turned down a chance to stay up late and go to the pub (rubbish aren't I), so this time we watched Toy Story (far better).
Learning to tie knots and wire a plug kept me busy on Friday, with the SM (Stage Management) introductions to the other years, in the fork of the most embracing stories a third year could find out about us which was good fun. Come Friday night I went out (I know! I was surprised too). We (the flat) wandered off to the SU for 'Frap Night', but got bored and went to the pub (the designers and I) which was far nicer (I could actually hear what they were saying!). With hindsight this was not such a good idea, as I was up at 6.00am the following day!
Why was I up at 6.00am the following day I hear you ask (pause for you to ask). For a Doctor Who convention if course! A weekend in Bristol in a Doctor Who bubble sounded like a great idea and it is/was (I've written thus far on the Saturday evening whilst waiting for the episode to start), but I am a little tired. It's been a great day so far, meeting people from the show and catching up with a few friends. As ever at Fantom Films create a great atmosphere and schedule, including Philip Morris (who finds missing episodes) and a plethora of actors and directors. To top the day off (is it me or does this now sound like a recipe?) we have a screening of tonight's episode with the two main Dalek operators! Again another great story and a nice conclusion to last week's. Immediately after we had the Q&A with Barnaby Edward and Nick Pegg which was great (I did spend the episode looking from the screen to them thinking 'This is weird, they're sat here, but are on TV!'). Unfortunately following the Q&A I had to dash off for the train to Cardiff (home), forgetting that there was a rather important rugby game that night (at the time of writing this bit, it's Sunday, hence past tense for all you grammatical muppets). Cardiff was very busy, but I was soon home and in bed.
Sunday morning was a bit of a struggle, as yesterday's early stat and a series of late nights during the week were catching up on me (thankfully I had a nap on the train to Bristol), but I was ready for another great day! Once again there were a number of great panels and the guests were all lovely. I was particularly pleased that Barnaby Edwards remembered meeting me before (admittedly not which event, but I'll let him off). I particularly enjoyed Michael E. Briant's panel (Director of many classic stories) as his level of recall was incredible. The weekend was closed with Barnaby Edward and Nick Pegg's panel which as ever, was very entertaining, as had Debora Watling and Fraser Hines's panel first thing that day. I then found myself heading back to Cardiff and am now just off to bed at last!) having won the award for worst student again, by staying in and watching another Pixar film.
