Who in Oxfordshire
Having had a week away from dashing around and talking to
people, it is perhaps no surprise to you that I was back to the usual this weekend
as I headed off to Oxfordshire for three days of Who.
The weekend started however on Thursday night, as Martin met me in Cardiff and we popped across to Chapter for a screening of 'Years and Years' (yes, I know I've already seen it). On a second watch, it still very much held my attention and really was a great peace of television. As before, it was followed by a Q&A with the one an only Russell T. Davies who was on fine form and entertaining as ever.
Arriving on Friday for a change I was straight into it, as I
was the first helper to arrive. To my delight I had the pleasure to be sat with
a fascinating director who had so many great stories to tell, not only about
his television work, but also starting out in theatre with Oliviera (as you
do). I ended up spending most of the day with him and yet there still seemed to
be more and more stories and things to talk about. Tony arrived later on, so it
was nice to spend time with him and at last catch-up with him. After a long,
but enjoyable evening in the bar with Tony, talking about everything, I called
it a (rather late) night having had a wonderful first day of the event.
Despite a late finish it was an early start on Saturday, but
relaxed as it started with a cooked breakfast (always a good idea). Saturday
felt like the busiest day of the event as I didn’t leave the stage all day it
seems. Through the course of the day I did a fair few commentaries and
interviews, I think six in total. Now whilst that might not sound like much, I
had spent the last few weeks swatting up best I could about my victims and
thankfully they all seemed to go well (as ever I was over prepared). Most of the
guests felt more like friends however, with the likes of June, Margot, Mo, Anthony
and John being there which was lovely, particularly as we had such a nice day
in terms of the weather.
Sunday was busy, but in a different way, instead spent
sitting with guests (back to normal). I had the great pleasure of sitting with
Felicity Gibson in the morning. Having met her briefly earlier this year, it was
nice to be able to talk to her properly and I think we both had a lovely time
(I can only speak for myself). The afternoon very much centred around an 80s
story reunion, all of whom were great fun. Again, I had the pleasure of sitting
with someone whom I had only briefly met before and we both had a laugh as he
signed. As ever seems to be the case, the weekend seemed to fly by and before I
knew it, I was heading back to Cardiff. Next year sees the event at another
house, so whilst it will be just as much fun, the familiar setting will change.
As ever though it was a weekend of fun and laughter.
