Dashing around
I could have called this entry a weekend or two halves or a
brief trip up north, but I’m pretty sure I’ve done that already (I’m
imaginative I know).
Anyway, Friday night I headed up north for a flying visit.
After a busy week of sweeping (yep still going) it was nice to be driving north
not east for a change. Saturday (again or a change) was rather relaxed with no
dashing around, doing exciting jobs like having a haircut (I know!) and
enjoying not really doing a great deal and being home for the day. The
afternoon and evening however were spent in Manchester. Firstly, going for tea
with Helen (neither of those things happens often) which was great, before
heading off to the Exchange. The impetus for my wander up north was to see the
show really, namely ‘Mother Courage and Her Children’; a new one for me but
also a new adaptation of Brecht. Set in a far flung, war-torn Europe it was
certainly a powerful, punkish production with some fascinating characters. The company
was led by Julie Hesmondhalgh who was brilliant as Mother Courage. At the time
it was only the second night and the second preview come to think of it so it
was very much early days but we all very much enjoyed it, so I will be
interested to see what the critics make of it next week. Afterwards (yep you
guessed it), we stage-doored the show, meeting Julie (again) who was chatty and
charming and lovely.
Sunday was an early start as I headed back to Cardiff, only
to arrive and go back to bed as that night I had a long night shoot so had to deliberately
muck up my sleep pattern (a little odd at first but you get use to it). I can’t
really say much about the shoot as ever, but it wasn’t as cold as I’d expected
even if it was windy!
