John Godber

This week marks my first week back at home of the Easter holidays. Have I enjoyed the rest and caught up on my sleep I hear you ask? No I haven't dear reader, I've been working. Nothing theatre related for a change, simply a bit of work with my Mum to keep my busy. I seem to have done longer hours and am more tired than I've been in the last six weeks of college! (perhaps college is the holiday?).
Work aside, on Thursday evening Mum and I went to the New Vic to see John Godber's latest play 'Shafted'. The play followed a couple, as the husband lost his job at the mine and then gradually moved on with his life. The first act went chronologically from the late 80s to mid-90s, whilst the second act started in 2014 and worked backwards, which I thought was an interesting way to tell a story. It was a two hander, starring by the man himself, John Godber, and his wife Jane Thornton. Having studied Godber at GCSE and A Level if was a little surreal to finally see him acting in one of his plays, as opposed to a practitioner that we talked about. As ever he combined comedic throw away lines, with more sombre moments, to make for a thought proving yet very enjoyable play.
After the excitement of Thursday I'm not sure my weekend really compares that much. I started as I meant to go on by getting a haircut (I know, and that's pretty much the highlight of the day!) and then went shopping (I'm boring myself here, sorry dear reader). Sunday was spent sorting out my room, as it has now become quite a storage room for all sorts. Whilst not necessarily the most exciting way to spend the day, I found many treasures that I'd forgotten about. I took a break from the boxes and had a lovely Skype chat with Frank Cox, a TV director, about all sorts; a delight as ever.
Exactly what next week will bring is a mystery, although I think there are a few theatre trips ahead.
